Certified nursing aides provide or assist with basic care or support under the direction of onsite licensed nursing staff. They perform duties such as monitoring of health status, feeding, bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting,  or ambulation of patients in a health or nursing facility. Responsibilities may include medication administration and other health-related tasks.

DC Registration Requirements

Certified nursing aides are governed by the DC Board of Nursing.  To become certified as a certified nursing aide in DC, applicants must:

Prerequisites

Be at least 18 years old

Certifications

Receive a passing score on the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) or another examination approved by the Board

National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP)

Successful completion of a CNA program or bridge to nurse aide program, within the past 24 months, approved by the Board or by a nursing board in the United States with standards determined by the Board OR,
Successful completion of a practical nursing or registered nursing “Fundamentals of Nursing” course with a minimum 40 hours clinical component OR,
Completion of a credentials evaluation by an organization recognized by the Board, indicating equivalent education as a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse for nurses educated outside of the United States

Pay $55 exam fee
Maintain certification with 24 hours of continuing education every two years

Background Check

Undergo a criminal background check every 2 years

License

Following the completion of training, register with the DC Board of Nursing through Credentia.com
